Hungary’s mining and quarrying sector accounted for less than 1% of GDP in 2015. The output of the sector fell by 11.8% y/y in 2015 and the downward trend continued in the first seven months of 2016 with a decline of 27.6% y/y. The decrease was due above all to the plummeting international commodity prices. However, these prices started to show signs of stabilisation in mid-2016 which is a positive driver for the sector in Hungary. On the other hand, the tax regime changes and nationalisation policies that the government has undertaken in recent years are weighing down on foreign direct investments in the sector and in 2015 the net FDI flow was negative at HUF 10.3bn.
