| In 1978, an agreement between the governments of Brazil and Japan - which was attended by Vale (then known as Companhia Vale do Rio Doce) - created the company Alunorte - Alumina do Norte do Brasil S.A., designed to integrate the aluminum production chain in Para state rich in bauxite, the alumina raw material.
