Bulgarian alternative telecoms operator Orbitel was launched in 1997 as a business-oriented Internet service provider. The company introduced its first national dial-up network in 2000 and a year later it rolled out Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) services. In 2003, Orbitel and five other companies were licensed by the local telecoms watchdog to set up, maintain and operate a public fixed-line network for 20 years.
